Poorman's Acoustic Lap Steel

I'm thinking about converting a standard acoustic guitar into a "Weissenborn-styled" lap steel with a high bone nut. I am leaning towards the smaller, traveler size (Martin Backpacker or Washburn Rover) but am also considering the "000" and dreadnought style bodies. More then likely, I'll be working with something used.

So, here are my questions:

1 - Any recommendations on body style? Likes? Dislikes?
2 - Recommendations on tunings and string gauges (for BG & Old-Time music styles).

I don't have alot of money to spend on this project (couple hundred tops), which is why it's a "Poorman's Acoustic Lap Steel". Thank you in advance for any input, thoughts, etc..
